Desi Bouterse trial postponed because of COVID-19

The trial against Desi Bouterse which was scheduled to take place on July 30 has been postponed due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Bouterse’s attorney,

Irvin Kanhai, confirmed that the trial has been postponed. Bouterse appeared in court on January 22. The Military Court then chose March 31 as the next date for the trial.

The trial did not go through on March 31 and was moved to April 29 before being moved to June 30. Bouterse was sentenced in absence to 20 years in prison on November

29, 2020. He lodged an appeal via his attorney on December 2.
