NPS looks forward to discussion about changing election system
The National Party Suriname (NPS) is looking forward to the discussions within the new coalition and parliament regarding the further changing of the election system. Although the NPS received 32,000 votes it only got 3 parliamentary seats. On paper the NPS is the third biggest party. The VHP is the biggest while the NDP is the second biggest party. The ABOP had about 25,000 votes but got 8 parliamentary seats from several districts because of the current election system. NPS chairman Gregory Rusland hopes to get enough political support to address the issue. “I understand that it is not that simple but we would like the election system to be reviewed so that we can leave a fair system for our descendants,” said Rusland. “The NPS is currently in a very tight spot because of the current election system. But it is what it is and we have to accept that. It will not be easy to get everybody on the same page,” said Rusland who added that the HVB got zero seats despite getting more than 7,000 votes. The BEP had fewer votes but still got 2 parliamentary seats. The PL ended up with only 2 parliamentary seats although more than 16,000 people voted for this party. “The coalition that will run the country must take a look at this,” said Rusland.
