Presidential election to take place around July 14

-

The election of the nation’s next president and vice president will take place in parliament as planned but it will no longer take place on July 9. Deputy Chairman of parliament Dew Sharman pointed out that the election must take place on July 15 at the latest. The new coalition will stick to its plan to elect a new president and VP around mid July. The members of parliament will discuss the preparations for the presidential election on July 6. “After Monday one must wait a few days so that the names of the candidates can be published. After that one must wait at least 3 days before one can hold a public session”, said Deputy Chairman Sharman. The strict measures aimed at minimizing the risk of COVID19 infections remain the biggest challenge at the moment. The workers at parliament are sparing no efforts in rearranging the rooms in parliament. “An expert from the COVID19 team came here to give instructions regarding the seating and other prevention measures. We are busy implementing additional safety measures”, said the Deputy Chairman who is currently in charge due to the fact that Chairman Ronnie Brunswijk has tested positive for COVID19. Organizing the special session where the president and VP will be elected remains an additional challenge because more prominent figures are expected to be present in the conference room.
