Suriname has second highest number of COVID19 deaths in Caricom

-

Suriname currently has the second highest number of deaths as a result of COVID19 in the Caricom. Neighboring Guyana had the second spot for a while but the number of infections and deaths has risen drastically in Suriname since the last week of May. Now Suriname has more infections than Guyana and the same number of COVID19 deaths as Guyana.

Guyana has 3 people in critical condition while Suriname has 6. Of all the 15 member states of the Caricom Suriname also has the third highest number of infections namely 565 while Haiti has 6,294 and Jamaica 728. Haiti has an estimated population of 11.1 million while Jamaica has a population of more than 2.9 million. Prior to the elections of May 25, 2020 Suriname

served as an example to the region and the rest of the world because there were no more active COVID19 cases and only 1 COVID19 death. Experts expressed their concern regarding the fast pace at which the virus is spreading in Suriname.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia, Grenada and Dominica are currently the only Caricom member states with zero COVID19 deaths. They also had fewer than 31 COVID19 cases. 2.47 million COVID19 cases have been reported in South America. 63 percent of these cases were reported in neighboring Brazil. More than half of these cases have already been cured. There are currently about 839,000 active COVID19 cases in the region.
