US and the Netherlands willing to help Suriname
Two countries have indicated that they are willing to help Suriname to get through the financial crisis,” said presidentelect Chandrikapersad Santokhi at a press conference in Marriott Hotel on Wednesday. The United States of America and the Netherlands are willing to lend a helping hand to Suriname. “It is a fact that Suriname
is in financial trouble. But we must nevertheless work hard to get through this crisis,” said Santokhi who added that collaboration on bilateral and multilateral level is necessary to get through this. He also explained that the debts of the previous government must be rearranged and that the bilateral relations with the Netherlands must be restored and deepened. The ministers of Foreign Affairs of both nations are scheduled to hold talks today. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has reportedly indicated that the Netherlands want to station an ambassador in Suriname. Santokhi made it clear that he has no problems with that. “The bilateral relation between Suriname and the Netherlands must be based on mutual benefit and respect. For now Suriname will not station a diplomatic representative in the Netherlands. The new government wants to evaluate all existing diplomatic representatives.”
