US sees Suriname as good example of orderly post-election period
Suriname is being seen as an example for orderly and peaceful transitions during the postelection period in the region. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said this during a conversation with President Chandrikapersad Santokhi on Saturday. Mr Pompeo pointed out that the United States of America is very content with the fact that the current coalition started discussing fundamental and urgent issues with the previous administration at an early phase as part of the democratic process and transitional period. Mr Pompeo also pointed out that the US is prepared to help Suriname at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and to seek urgent development funds at multilateral banks such as the World Bank and the InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB). Mr Pompeo reconfirmed what the White House national security adviser for the Western Hemisphere, Mauricio ClaverCarone, had already told President Santokhi.
President Santokhi and Mr Pompeo agree that the strengthening of collaboration on the Western Hemisphere is of big importance for political and social stability. Collaboration
within the Organization of American States (OAS) and within the relations with the Caribbean Community (Caricom) will also be discussed. Details regarding the collaboration on technical policy areas, including security, renewable energy and investments from joint ventures with the American business community will also be worked out further in the coming months.
