Oedit risks 19 years in prison and SRD 350,000 fine

-

District Attorney Shanta Mahadew on Monday demanded that Ramchender Oedit be sentenced to 19 years in prison and that he also be given a fine of SRD 350,000 or an additional 12 months behind bars. Mahadew told the court that Oedit was a member of a crime organization on March 12 and 13, 2018 and that he and his accomplices smuggled 488,680 grams of cocaine into the country on March 21, 2018. A drug shipment was intercepted and several workers of Oedit were arrested after the police had received information about a drug drop on the airstrip that is located on the premises of Oedit. After the plane had dropped off a shipment of drugs on Oedit’s property on March 12 it went back to Venezuela to pick up another batch of cocaine. The plane then returned to Suriname to make another delivery on Oedit’s airstrip the next day. Oedit was present when the delivery was made. The district attorney pointed out that Oedit had a facilitating role as he made an essential contribution by supplying fuel to the drug plane. Defense Attorney Irvin Kanhai made it clear that his client had no part in any criminal actions. He pointed out that the judge had to indicate if his client had broken the law on the Firearms Act.
