Guyana fears imported corona from Suriname
While the call for border security to be beefed up near the south eastern border of Suriname in order to stop the import of COVID-19, the opposite is taking place west of Suriname. Neighboring Guyana which has the novel coronavirus under control fears that Suriname’s epidemic could cross the river. Guyanese news reports indicate that 1 of 11 people who travelled from Suriname to Guyana has tested positive for COVID-19. Reports indicate that 10 Cubans and 1 Irishman entered Guyana via the backtrack.
Terrence Esseboom, spokesperson at the Guyanese Ministry of Health, revealed that 1 of the Cubans has tested positive for COVID-19. The man was put in isolation at once after the results from the lab were in. Health officials fear that he has infected other people while travelling to East Coast Demerara. As a precaution the other 10 people have been put in state quarantine. Police Commissioner
Police Commander of Region Six, Calvin Brutus, has already announced that these 11 people will be punished to the full extent of the immigration law. He is puzzled by the fact that the illegal immigrants managed to sneak into Guyana because of the constant border patrols and because no boats are allowed to cross the river. Guyanese media houses claim that there are at least 3 locations where illegal immigrants can enter Guyana.
