Government asks AG to appoint special prosecutor
The new government is serious about retrieving all of the money and property of the state that have been taken without permission. Attorney General Roy Baidjnath Panday has already been asked to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate a number of cases. “He is working on it,” said President Chandrikapersad Santokhi who explained that the special prosecutor will be tasked with investigating organized forms of corruption. The government will also establish a special work group to investigate all suspicious cases and to send the dossiers to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The president explained that the promise to take action against unlawful actions that were not in the nation’s best interest will be kept. “It must become clear that the people were impoverished as a result of mismanagement and the thefts of the money of the people of Suriname. The money must be returned to the people of Suriname,” said President Santokhi.
