Minister Ramadhin: “BGvS refuses to deliver medicines”

-

“Bedrijf Geneesmiddelen Voorziening Suriname (BGVS) has enough medicines in stock to help out the nation’s hospitals but the company refuses to do so. The executives made it clear that the old bills must first be paid,” Health Minister Amar Ramadhin told Times of Suriname. The minister who was recently given a tour of the company explained that there does not have to be a shortage of medicines in the nation if the BGVS keeps doing its job which is to deliver medicines. “It is unacceptable for the BGVS to refuse to deliver medicines that it has in stock while the hospitals urgently need new supplies. The medicines are the property of the state and this means that they can’t keep them in their storage rooms,” said the minister who made it clear that if the BGVS refuses to carry out the order of its employer, it risks losing its job. “The company is an extension of the government that was created many years ago so that medicines that are brought into the country could be at one central location before being distributed among the hospitals and pharmacies. The government has once again urged them to keep delivering medicines,” said Minister Ramadhin. Meanwhile the government is trying to figure out how to pay all the old bills. The Health minister announced that the government would evaluate the BGVS. “The role of the BGVS in the import and distribution of medicines is being evaluated to determine how effective it is. A new board of directors will be appointed because the term in office of the previous one has already expired. New and experienced people who are experts when it comes to medicines will be appointed,” said Minister Ramadhin.
