DRUNK LOGIC AT PLAY

-

Re: “Stores get 30 days to move booze off shelf” ( BP, July 11).

I just checked the distance on Google Earth and the huge school at the bottom of South Pattaya Road is only 186 metres from Walking Street. There are bars and shops selling drinks there 24/7. Of course, that will be an exception to the ban on alcohol near schools.

I suppose it would never occur to a schoolkid to jump on their motorbike and scoot up the road a bit if they wanted to buy their favourite tipple.

Some good news though, the Pattaya police are really clamping down now on the drink-drivers here.

People who have been arrested have told me that if you get pulled over and breathalysed, you now have the opportunity to go with an officer to the ATM to pay 10,000 on the spot if you are a foreigner and 3,000 if you are Thai. If you do not pay up then a night in the cells and a court appearance looms.

I am sure that the massive effort being put in to this campaign is purely in the name of road safety and has nothing to do with the financial rewards. EM Biber
