ZOMBIE LANE

App Store and Google Play — Free

The fallen world doesn’t have to be all gloom and doom. It can instead be about chillaxing in the garden, watching the plants grow, petting your dog — and taking out the zombies crawling toward your fence. This colourful game has you assume the role of a male or female survivor working to rebuild your normal home life. As normal as a zombie-ridden world can be, anyway. But you aren’t alone in this apocalypse. After completing a few quests, you’ll be joined by your pet dog and your spouse. After you get your household back on track, you can explore other areas, where new quests await. Take a break from zombie killing by visiting your neighbours or shopping for new weapons, clothes and home decor. You’ll also get to personalise your avatars with new clothes and accessories. Players can send each other special items and energy (normally you have to wait for it to replenish over time). Having many fellow players means tonnes of free energy, so you can make your killing spree last all day long.

WALKING DEAD: ROAD TO SURVIVAL

App Store and Google Play — Free

Based on The Walking Dead comic book series, the game offers a bloody good mix of role-playing, strategy and city construction. Assemble teams of survivors to eliminate zombies and rival humans who stand in your way. The game progresses like a comic book, so you’ll get to enjoy the story as you build your city and make life-and-death decisions. Characters are different in their tiers, special abilities, types and weapon of choice, and can be leveled up by consuming other characters and resources. For example, you can assign the series’ leading man, Rick Grimes, as a leader to increase attack strength of all gun-wielding characters on your team. Bullets alone, however, aren’t enough to survive. In very challenging battles, you’ll need to throw a Molotov cocktail or two — or other special items that you craft — to more easily defeat your enemies. The walkers may be slow, but can take your survivors out in a bite or two. There are player-versus-player duels, daily missions and time-limited missions to complete. So much killing, so little time.

INTO THE DEAD

App Store and Google Play — Free

You’ll be into this game if you like a quick scare. Into The Dead is about running, from a first-person perspective, through a shambling zombie-filled field, avoiding becoming undead dinner for as long as you can. The longer you run, the more coins you earn — but also the more challenging and scary things get. You don’t have to face the undead defenseless, however, as there are perks to ensure you a better chance of survival, from a chainsaw to a companion dog. These perks cost coins, but you can watch game trailers or choose other offers via the game to earn thousands, for free. Collect enough coins to unlock new features and complete mission sets to unlock new challenges. Sooner or later, you’ll be eaten alive — but at least you’ll get plenty of thrills before the inevitable chomps down on you.
