Gaborik helps Kings edge Blackhawks

-

LOS ANGELES: Marian Gaborik scored the tying goal with about six minutes left in regulation time and added his fifth of the season two minutes into overtime, lifting the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL on Saturday night.

Chicago right wing Patrick Kane broke an NHL record for American-born players with a point in his 19th consecutive game, scoring on a power play and assisting on Niklas Hjalmarsson’s first goal of the season.

But the Blackhawks, who beat Anaheim 3-2 in overtime on Friday after trailing 2-0 with less than two minutes left in regulation, blew a 2-0 third-period lead against the Kings. It was the Stanley Cup champions’ first loss since the start of last season when leading after two periods.

Gaborik got the equaliser with a short wrist shot from the slot after defenceman Brent Seabrook overskated the puck while trying to carry it out of his own end and lost it to Anze Kopitar. His second game-winner of the season came on a shot that beat Scott Darling low to the stick side.

Elsewhere, Dallas rallied from a threegoal deficit to beat Minnesota 4-3 in overtime, Washington beat Toronto 4-2 for their fifth straight win, New Jersey topped Montreal 3-2 in overtime and Edmonton had their first win in Pittsburgh in nearly 10 years, 3-2 in a shoot-out.

Dallas’ Tyler Seguin scored at 3:57 minutes of overtime after Alex Goligoski, Jamie Benn and John Klingberg all scored for the Stars in the third period.

Antti Niemi made 23 saves as the Stars won for the fifth time in six games.

Washington’s Jason Chimera had a goal and an assist and Tom Wilson, Marcus Johansson and Justin Williams also scored for the Capitals, who improved to 7-2-0 on the road and 17-5-1 overall.

It was the third straight loss for lastplace Toronto.

New Jersey defenceman John Moore scored in overtime, following goals by Patrik Elias and Kyle Palmieri.
