Widow seeks answers to detainee death

- ABDULLOH BENJAKAT

PATTANI: The wife of a man found dead on Friday while in custody at a military camp has called on state agencies to investigate her husband’s death and verify the cause of it.

Kurosamo Tuwaebuesa, 34, said she believed the death of her husband, Abdullayi Dolo, 42, at Inkhayutthaborihan military camp in Nong Chik district was unusual because her husband was normally in good health and did not suffer from any chronic diseases.

She had visited her husband just one day before his death and said he had appeared fine.

His only complaint was that he was tired, but he did not reveal anything else during the brief meeting, she said. Ms Kurosamo said she suspected her husband might have withheld any difficulty he was facing to avoid causing more problems with the authorities there.

She said her husband was a good man, saying he was a farmer while she is a grocer. The family has three children and one orphaned child relative to take care of.

Ms Kurosamo said her husband was detained over his alleged involvement in the southern violence and the allegations had badly damaged the family’s reputation.

Their home had been raided four times since 2013, she said. In the first raid, authorities said they suspected illicit drugs were being stored at the house.

According to Ms Kurosamo, in the second raid, carried out last year, authorities claimed to have found a link between the southern violence and a telephone number she had used.

She was then detained for questioning but was released on the same day. Their home was raided twice more this year and her husband was detained even though authorities found nothing unusual, Ms Kurosamo said.

They only claimed her husband was named by other suspects, she said.

An unnamed relative of Abdullayi said the preliminary autopsy results — carried out by the hospital of Prince of Songkhla University — showed no signs of broken bones or swelling, though bruises and blood were found on Abdullayi’s right wrist.

The official results of the autopsy should come out in a few days, the relative said.
