Thailand’s most beautiful search just got a blast of reality

- — Parisa Pichitmarn

The nation’s biggest transgender extravaganza concludes tonight. Tune in to the final round, when Miss Tiffany 2016 will be crowned at Tiffany’s Show Theater in Pattaya. After all the contests that have been taking place since last month, from Miss Fit & Firm to the After Beauty Shot challenge, the competition is now down to its final 30 contestants.

Alternating with the final round is also a special show from Tiffany Show Pattaya. The show will start at 9.30pm, with the winner announced at 11.30pm. Call 038-421-700-5 for seating reservations. If you won’t be one of the 1,000 people in attendance tonight, Channel 7 will be broadcasting the show live from 10.30pm-1am.

The contest, which welcomes both ladyboys who may or may not have gone through sexual-reassignment surgery, has been taking place annually in Pattaya since 2004. Although gorgeous winners that never fail to disappoint take the crown every year, none have proven to be more influential and successful than the very first winner, Treechada “Poyd” Petcharat. Now a household name and a symbol of third-gender aspirations, this former Miss Tiffany has been popular in whatever she’s dabbled in, be it as a fashion model, a soap star or simply a heartthrob for China.

On the women’s side of the stage, things aren’t as simple as a mere application form anymore. For the first time since its inception 82 years ago, Miss Thailand, the long-standing beauty contest, will assume contemporary society’s most popular form of programming: that of a reality show.

Before making it to the final competition, ladies aged 17-25 will have to make it through the reality TV show first. This year’s concept of “Challenge Your Limit” attempts to showcase the “modern woman” by losing the image of children-doting beauty queens, on a media tour to a string of temples.

Besides beauty and smarts, contestants will have to excel at tasks such as anchoring, fundraising for the Red Cross, performing action sequences and others relating to the world of bright lights. The reality show will air on Channel 7 every Wednesday from July 6-Aug 24, and the final competition will be held on Aug 31.

If you want to follow in the footsteps of notable Miss Thailand alumni like actress Lalana “Jeab” Kongtoranin (Miss Thailand 2006), application forms are available for downloading today until May 20 atwww. miss thailand official. com. Those who are eligible (one must be taller than 160cm, for instance) must pop by to Eden Zone at Central-World to hand in their application forms in person on May 21.
