SHARI SHARI INTRODUCES BANGKOKIANS TO THE WORLD OF SUSHI BURRITOS

- JARUPAT BURANASTIDPORN

My initial thought upon hearing about Thailand’s first sushi burrito was, “What has this world come to?” Next thing you know it’ll be pla ra popcorn, pad thai burger and ramen pizza on the fad list. My lack of interest in fusion food stems from the fact that more often than not, bringing two things that have already been perfected, mashing them together and hoping for the best just doesn’t seem to bounce with my (taste) buds.

While Shari Shari failed to spark our interest with its fusion concept, it actually surprised us with its smashing flavours and variety of fresh ingredients.

We wanted to try a bit of everything so we ordered four different mini rolls. If, like us, you thought these rolls would be tucked in nicely in sheets of tortilla, you would be mistaken. Different fillings are wrapped in rice and nori. In other words, it looks and tastes pretty much like a massive uncut maki roll.

Don’t miss the Salmon BLT (B135) which includes fresh salmon sashimi, bacon, avocado, tomato, romaine lettuce and purple cabbage. It’s creamy, indulgent and yet considerably healthy. A perfect lunch time treat you’d have if you couldn’t decide between sushi and a bacon sandwich.

Unfortunately, the Fiery tuna (B135) wasn’t all that impressive; the raw tuna was rather bland and the spicy mayo sauce didn’t quite give it the lift we expected. The same couldn’t be said for the Korean chicken (B90) though, which we thought was the real star of Shari Shari. Packed with crunchy fried chicken, kimchi, pickled radish, carrots and drizzled with a fantastic mix of mayonnaise and Korean-style sweet sauces, it had balanced flavours down to a tee and simply smashed it out of the ballpark for us.

Is there much difference between their sushi burrito and the fusion-style maki you can find around town? Not really. Does it taste good? Oh yeah, but just stick to the salmon and the chicken. If you’re ever in the area looking for a quick, healthy Japanesy lunch that you can eat with one hand while on-the-go, Shari Shari is where you can find it.
