Celebrating musicals
Vocal stars from London’s West End will return to join hands with musical director Michael England and the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra during “The Magic of the Musicals” concert at Thailand Cultural Centre, Ratchadaphisek Road, on Sept 5 at 8pm.
This is the fourth consecutive annual visit to Bangkok by England who has always entertained a packed house with only the best talent from the UK theatre. This time he will be joined by the singing duo of Robyn North and Oliver Tompsett who graced the very Bangkok stage previously. The night will feature a long set list of some two dozen songs, mixing upbeat numbers with slower, more emotional ones. Set to get the show off to an energetic start will be Michael’s own West End Overture No.1, followed by Mister Cellephane from Chicago and the teary-eyed ballad Tell Me It’s Not True from Blood Brothers.
Older classics such as West Side Story and My Fair Lady will be represented by the well-loved showstoppers Something’s Coming and I Could Have Danced All Night respectively, with equally historic overtures to A Chorus Line and South Pacific, as well as the endlessly hummable The Sound of Music Medley.
Modern mega-musicals will also feature Solo Saxophone and Why God Why? from Miss Saigon;Can You Feel The Love Tonight, Elton John’s modern classic from The Lion King; and the by-now traditional annual tribute to the Phantom Of The Opera — Think Of Me, All I Ask Of You, and Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again.
