A 24-year-old man in Sakon Nakhon has opted to spend a 700,000-baht gift on a white buffalo, rather than a car as originally proposed by his father, according to Workpoint News.

Narakorn Sripua said his father rewarded him upon his college graduation with the lump sum. The money was intended to go towards the purchase of his first car so he could use it for work, he said.

But he decided to spend it on a white buffalo instead. As a graduate of animal husbandry, he wanted to turn his knowledge to breeding white buffaloes. More importantly, he said it was not the time for him to own a car. He is now running a buffalo farm in Sakon Nakhon.

The white buffalo has smooth and slightly pink skin. Breeding white buffaloes requires special attention to hygiene.

He said he has decided to run a buffalo farm because buffaloes are in crisis. Farmers are growing less dependent on them to help with farm work, with many opting for machines.

He said he believes there are fewer than 1 million buffaloes left in Thailand.

His white buffalo is now three years old and weighs over 2 tonnes. The animal won a beauty contest last year, he said, adding there was a 3-million-baht offer for the beast but he turned it down.

His father, Sangasilp Sripua, who accepted his decision to buy the buffalo instead of the car, said his son now makes a steady income from breeding.
