PM hardly a good chap

-

I hope that Farang from Chiang Mai, author of the letter titled “PM’s a decent bloke”, (PostBag, Aug 27), read Kong Rithdee’s commentary “Going S44 cold turkey is going to hurt” published on the same day.

Kong Rithdee says there is an addiction “to the magic of Section 44”, and that it is perceived as “a swift, cure-all super-law that overrides any pre-existing mechanisms and bypasses all other laws” (in effect, an artefact of martial law). A “decent bloke” would not be using Section 44 to override everything he does not like, and bulldoze through what he does like.

Talking of bulldozers, Mahakan Fort is not the only place in the firing line: the PM is only treading carefully on this one because it is more of a hot potato than other evictions he is pursuing.

He does not have a mandate to do any of this; he is not elected by the people, yet he is bulldozing through what he thinks is good for the people — something dictators have done for eons. WATSON
