KING MONGKUT PLAY IMAGINES THE FUTURE WORLD
The Faculty of Architecture at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang will be showcasing their annual stage play, Robot
Boy: New Friend, Big Heart, scheduled for March 9-12.
Set in a retro-futuristic city divided by the droid-loving West and droid-opposing East, the play follows the story of SB13, a droid scientist purposely created with the ability to think and feel as humans do. With his unique qualities setting him apart from other droids, he is used by scientists to manipulate and frame others within the research facility. SB13 is eventually taken away from the facility to a garbage dump, where he seeks refuge. At the dump is where he meets 14-year-old Holm, a girl from the city’s droid-hating East side. Against her faction’s ideologies, she decides to take SB13 back with her.
Upon experiencing life in the East side, SB13 begins to question his given qualities. In a district where his kind are disliked, he starts to notice certain similarities between himself and other humans. A conflict of self-realisation occurs within himself, of whether what separates him from humans beings is based on emotion or his physical state of being.
With nine months of preparation invested in the play,
Robot Boy aims to provoke the minds of its viewers with a philosophical yet entertaining take on the concept of emotion. The play also will feature neon light displays along with its retro-futuristic concept, to accentuate its main protagonist, the droid SB13.
Robot Boy: New Friend, Big Heart will be shown in King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang’s Main Auditorium. On March 9 and 10, the play will be shown at 7pm. There will be two scheduled shows on March 11 and 12, starting at 1pm and 7pm.
Tickets are 200 baht, and are bookable at www.showbeekmitl.com, or at the Faculty of Architecture’s U-Store, open Mondays to Fridays from 10.30am-6pm.
