IT’S O-FISH-AL

OFFICIAL OPENING, SUSHI ZO

-

Sushi Zo is located, like a ninja, almost unnoticeably on the ground floor of Athenee Tower. Despite its high calibre, there’s no sign to announce its existence, except for a logo on its door and a narrow window to pique your curiosity (and appetite). That being said, it’s definitely worth seeking it out if you’re up for a Michelin-quality omakase experience. In 2009, the LA-based restaurant’s original branch was awarded its first Michelin star. Last year, its New York branch got another. With this kind of acclaim, you know Bangkok’s Sushi Zo is going to be super.

Interior-wise, Sushi Zo keeps the vibe very minimal. A long bar serves as a front-row seat for a culinary theatre as you watch two Japanese chefs skilfully prepare sushi before your eyes. Being strictly an omakase venue, you leave it to the chef to decide what he would like to make for you. That’s not the only surprise factor. No two meals here are the same as the chef’s team works with seasonal ingredients imported from famous fish suppliers in Japan.

During our visit, there were many standouts from over 20 items served throughout the meal. Oyster topped with ponzu and scallion was a refreshing and delicious start. Drizzled with yuzu juice and yuzu pepper, Yagara fish offered a scrumptious bite with just the right amount of citrusy zing. Brushed with special soy sauce, the Seared fatty tuna almost melted in the mouth while releasing a smoky touch. Ikura is simply an explosion of flavour. These salmon roes are especially flavourful, be- ing marinated in dashi, soy sauce and sweet sake. A box of dessert and matcha are served to cap off the meal.

With only two rounds per day and 12 seats during each round, Sushi Zo offers an intimate setting to turn a meal into an experience. Needless to say, booking well in advance is a must. An omakase meal with 20+ items is priced at B7,000++ per person.

Tue-Sun 5-9:30pm. Sushi Zo, Athenee Tower, Witthayu Road. www.sushizobangkok.com, 02-168-8490.
