Lacy set to sign with Seahawks

-

LOS ANGELES: Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy is set to join the Seattle Seahawks on a one-year deal in a bid to reinvigorate his career, reports said on Tuesday.

Lacy, 26, rushed for more than 1,000 yards a season in his first two campaigns with the Packers after joining from Alabama in 2013.

But the running back has failed to repeat those numbers in the seasons since amid injury and concerns over his weight, which became a bone of contention with coach Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy had said last season Lacy would need to shed pounds in order to rediscover his best form.

But Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said on Tuesday he was not concerned by Lacy’s bulk.

“He’s a big man. I want him big,” Carroll told 710 ESPN radio.

“I want him big and tough and strong, but I want him in the best shape so that he can run at his best and be durable and handle the load. ...So we have a real target for him. We’ll be on it on a regular basis and we’ll keep him in great shape.”

Lacy’s one-year deal is worth up to US$5.5 million with $3 million guaranteed.

The Seahawks are hoping to use Lacy as a battering ram as they attempt to plug the hole in their running game created by the retirement of Marshawn Lynch, who quit the sport in February last year.

Lacy played only five games last season before undergoing a season-ending ankle operation, compiling a career-low 360 yards with zero touchdowns.
