Life’s a beach when playing polo

The 8th InterContinental-B.Grimm Asian Beach Polo Championship 2017 in Hua Hin will see athletes from around the world compete for a good cause

The 8th InterContinental-B.Grimm Asian Beach Polo Championship 2017, the only beach polo competition in Asia, is back on the beach in front of the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort & Spa, Prachuap Khiri Khan, on Saturday.

Organised by B.Grimm, one of Thailand’s oldest business institutions, in collaboration with Proud Real Estate and InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, proceeds from this year’s event will go to Nabha Foundation under the royal initiative of HRH Princess Bajarakitiyabha, which helps the underprivileged, especially former female inmates who have served their sentences and need integrating back into society.

This sporting event is aimed to publicise Hua Hin, not only as Thailand’s ultimate beach town destination, but also a place where visitors, both locals and foreigners, can experience the world’s only polo sport played on the beach. The traditional sport of polo is played on horseback on a large grass field, where men and horses work in partnership to drive the polo ball through a goal. Hua Hin is the only place in the world where a beach event takes place.

“The beautiful Hua Hin beach, especially the portion in front of the InterContinental Resort, is very spacious with super fine sands making it strong, safe and suitable to serve as a field for polo,” said Dr Harald Link, chairman of B.Grimm, president of the Thailand Equestrian Federation and chairman of the Asian Beach Polo organising committee. “This year’s competition will see professional athletes from Germany, Argentina, Belgium and Thailand, playing an exciting game, not only for the joy of spectators but also for a very good cause.”

The day’s programme features various activities, such as games to win many prizes, beach polo tournament, horse-riding fashion show by leading celebrities and more. The competition will culminate in the evening when Proud Real Estate organises the “Victorian Night” theme party at the spacious Lanrom garden area next to InterContinental Blue Port Wing. Among the highlights are ballet performances and a charity auction of paintings created by artists from the Hua Hin Artists Village led by Prof Tawee Gesangarm, as well as sales of handcrafted products from Nabha Foundation.

The 8th InterContinental-B.Grimm Asian Beach Polo Championship 2017 will take place on Saturday from noon on the beach in front of the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort & Spa. Entrance fee (day and evening parts, including buffet dinner) is 1,500 baht net per person, and can be purchased at the booth at InterContinental Hua Hin on the event day.
