EAT LIKE A BOSS AT GOJI KITCHEN AND BAR

A STRATEGY TO BUFFET VICTORY

- STORY ERIC E SURBANO

Let’s be honest: buffets can be daunting at times. The selection of food that’s on offer can make your brain go into overload. Where do I start? How do I start? Will I be able to try a little bit of everything before I explode? Is it possible to restrain myself from just blindly eating? If you think buffets are just for mere enjoyment, think again. To get the most out of it, you’ve got to have a strategy.

The recently-opened Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park has their own buffet to add to the large list in Bangkok, named Goji Kitchen and Bar. The selection of food is vast and could be intimidating. That’s not really a bad thing when we’re talking about food, especially buffets. If you really want to enjoy all of what Goji has to offer, we suggest you follow our steps and you’ll be on your way to buffet victory.

1. As you walk in, disregard the fresh oysters on display and the mouth-watering desserts to your right — for now. You’ll realise as you turn right, Goji doesn’t simply put their food out on glorious display. They actually have live cooking stations and you can watch your food getting made. The whole buffet, like most, is split up into different cuisine categories. Worry not. You’ll get a taste of each if you follow our instructions. Now make your way to your seat and choose whether you want free flow juices and soft drinks (B99) or adult beverages at extra cost. Now stretch. You’re in for the long haul, foodwise.

2. First cuisine we’re going to get out of the way is Thai. Yes, we know the best Thai food is on the streets, but there won’t be any street food for long. Head over to the Thai section of the buffet and get yourself the beef noodles. Of all the items available to us at Goji, we were specifically recommended this dish. Once you taste it, you’ll understand why.

3. Now that we’ve got Thai cuisine out of the way, head over to the Indian section. Get some of the flat bread and try it out with the various curries they have. It’s a bit on the lighter side but we’re just preparing you for what’s yet to come.

4. Go over to the sushi bar to get a taste of the variety of sushi Goji has. While you’re there, go ahead and pick out what you want from the Seafood section nearby. We’re pretty sure what’s going to catch your eye is the ginormous lobsters they have. Alternatively, you could save the seafood section for the next step and here’s why.

5. Goji has a parilla grill that serves suckling pig, ribs, and steak. Why did we tell you that you could save the seafood section for this step? You can get a surf and turf going with the lobsters from the seafood section. You can also make your way to the oyster bar you saw on your way in and have yourself some of the fresh imported oysters on ice. And don’t be guilty about going back for seconds or thirds just because they’re imported oysters. We certainly weren’t.

7. Now onto Western cuisine! You can never go wrong with pasta, so go and customise your own pasta, whether it be spaghetti bolognese or carbonara. Take a picture of the huge cheese wheel beside the pasta station as well, because hey, we’re Asian and that’s what we do. Alternatively, you can also opt for the mashed potatoes and get some meat from the parilla grill.

8. Alright, by this time, you’re probably ready to call it quits. But hang in there! You cannot and should not miss the desserts Goji offers. It has the classic mango and sticky rice, with the mangoes being extra fresh and juicy. You can also go for the cakes and many flavoured mousses it has, like chocolate and Thai tea. Indulge and eat your heart out as you gaze upon the beauty of a whole bowl of tiramisu. We dare you not to go for seconds. But our personal favourite? The mango ice cream.

9. To top your Goji dining experience — since you’re already bursting at the seams by this point — have yourself a cup of delicious hot coffee. Don’t worry, it’s included in the buffet, so you’re not paying extra like you did your drinks.

If you’ve followed this well-thought out, tried and tested strategy, congratulations are in order. Not only did you enjoy the wide variety offered at Marriot’s Goji Kitchen and Bar; you’ve basically conquered the whole buffet spread. Now don’t eat for the next three days.
