Merging culture and individuals
A group of nine Indonesian and Thai artists will share their perspectives towards contemporary cultures and their effects in their respective countries through artworks, which will be displayed at the “Concept Of Self: On Power, Identity And Labels” exhibition at Subhashok the Arts Centre from Saturday to June 17.
The group exhibition aims at showing how contemporary cultures mould and alter individual lives, routines, social power and the ideologies of class structures and gender in Indonesia and Thailand. Sociological theories — macro and micro — are used to help explain and predict the social world in which the artists live.
Through various media such as photography, oil painting, video art and installation the four artists from Indonesia and five from Thailand will explore the nuances in the expressions of identity and social interactions.
Touching upon politics, superstitions, voyeurism and self-analysis, this exhibition offers the necessary contrast and comparison to see how the individual is conditioned in this cultural shift.
Participating Indonesian artists are Antonio S Sinaga, Patriot Mukmin, Theo Frids Hutabarat and Rega Ayundya Putri and five artists from Thailand are Alisa Chunchue, Anon Pairot, Chayanin Kwangkaew, Chulayarnnon Siriphol and Kitikun Mankit.
The opening reception will be on Saturday at 6pm at the Subhashok the Arts Centre on Sukhumvit 39 and opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10am-5.30pm and noon-6pm on Sunday.
