Some expats may be horrified at the prospect of being near dirty backpackers but for those who love comedy, this is the most real, raw and exciting comedy venue in Thailand. The audience is from everywhere in the world, some having just arrived hours before, some being experienced travellers and some sleeping in rooms with cockroaches and rats, so this is a comedy room unlike any other. If you want potential madness, or at least comedy from the heart, this is the place to go.

How is the crowd at Khao San? Are they tameable?

The venue is called 999 West and like its name, it’s the wild west of comedy clubs. However, luckily most of the rowdy chaps are already at ping pong shows so our audience filters out the best humans on Khao San road. I love them. Are they tameable? Yes? Are there moments of weirdness? Absolutely. It is Bangkok. It is Khao San. Anything can happen!

What’s the hardest thing about catering comedy to a diverse audience?

Connecting with people from so many different countries can be challenging. The audience might be from 12 different countries. But, funny is funny. Laughter is the moment where everyone connects with the same thing in the same moment. Comedy removes borders, creates bridges of love. The hardest thing is also the best thing. It’s what makes this club special.

Do you think Bangkok has the potential to be an Asian hub for comedy?

Definitely. Comedy is growing all over the world and even faster in Asia! Here in Bangkok, we have the acts, we have the audience so now all we need are well run, professional comedy clubs and luckily they are starting to pop up. Something really special is happening in the comedy world in Bangkok and I feel lucky to be a small part of it.
