THAI-CHINESE CULTURAL EXCHANGE

Ten ethnic groups from China will be flown into the Kingdom to present their art, culture and unique way of life through a number of performanc­es alongside those of two hill-tribe groups from northern Thailand during the “Mountains And Hill Tribes” fair at two shopping malls in Bangkok.

The cultural-exchange fair will run under the “Thailand-Yunnan Relations” theme at Seacon Bangkae, Phetkasem Road, from tomorrow to July 23, and under the “Thailand-Sichuan Relations” theme at Seacon Square, Srinakarin Road, from July 28 to Aug 6. Held in collaborat­ion with the Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture, the first part of the fair will feature 13 performanc­es by more than 30 performers from Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous prefecture of China’s Yunnan province. They represent nine tribes: Zhuang, Miao, Yi, Yao, Tai, Bai, Naji, Manchu and Han.

The line-up includes a paper horse dance, an octagon drum show, a wind-instrument­s show, a Chinese-fiddle solo, a Chinese-lute solo and a Chinese-song performanc­e. They will be staged daily at 5.30pm, plus a 2.30pm show on the weekends. Two sets of performanc­es by Akha and Karen hill tribes from northern Thailand will be presented from tomorrow to Sunday. They are a bamboo dance and a demonstrat­ion of Akha way of life. Tribal and ethnic group products and souvenirs from both countries, as well as northern Thai and Chinese cuisines, will also be available throughout the 10 days.

The second part of the fair at Seacon Square will present 23 spectacula­r performanc­es by a group of artists who represent the Yi ethnic group in Liangshan of Sichuan province. The shows include Yi ethnic group dance, vocal performanc­e, tribal instrument­s performanc­e and will be staged daily at 5.30pm, plus a 2.30pm show on the weekends from July 28 to Aug 6.

Once again, the aforementi­oned two sets of performanc­es by Akha and Karen hill tribes from Northern Thailand will be presented from July 28-30. Tribal products and cuisine from the two countries will also be available.
