Therapy that goes where you go

- — Nillapat Sanchaichana

Stigma and negative attitudes towards people with psychiatric problems is still obviously present in Thai society, but now those seeking real advice from specialists or counsellors can visit a new website for help.

Ooca is a recently launched mental health website that connects users with a community of board-licenced and credentialed therapists. Developed by Telemedica, the website, available in both Thai and English, welcomes those seeking help for various mental health issues, including but not limited to depression, work-life balance and family or relationship matters. The web guarantees utmost confidentiality, one of the primary concerns for those hesitant to reach out for professional help — understandably, because of the ubiquitous stigma attached to mental health.

The clean-looking, user-friendly app offers step-by-step instructions. It starts off by requiring patients to fill in some basic information about themselves. They can also opt to be anonymous. It’s then onto booking an appointment; a little blue pop-up window will show the name of the healthcare provider, profile picture and field of expertise. It also tells you how long you’ll have to stay on the waiting list in case you want to begin a session right away. Of course, the counselling session will be carried out online, via video call.

The price of online counselling starts at 300 baht for the first appointment, which lasts approximately 15 minutes. Payment for the following visits will vary according to the length of consultation and the price rate of each provider. If your diagnosis requires medication, the specialist may refer you to a clinic or hospital. The fee can be paid by credit or debit card after the online consultation.

If you’re unsure whether you require the service of a licenced therapist, you’re also able to take a free “Stress Inventory Test” that basically approximates the level of stress you are dealing with. After completing the test, you’ll be provided stress-relieving suggestions.

The application aims to help users consult therapists without consuming as much time or money compared to visiting an expert in person. Although open around the clock for booking, it does not accommodate emergency situations.

The site is now open for a closed beta trial period, where users receive 20% off until July 31.
