Young talent showcase
Five winners of the inaugural Singapore International Festival of Music Competition 2017 will give their debut performance in Bangkok at Sala Sudasiri Sobha, Lat Phrao 41, this Sunday at 4pm.
This is an opportunity to see the young and highly gifted musicians from Singapore — Michelle Zhu Manzhen (cello), Yeong Jun Kai (violin), Adrian Tang Zhi Feng (piano), Lauren Yeo (vocal) and Zhang Yifan Jem (piano) — perform a challenging repertoire of famous classical pieces in front of a Thai audience.
The programme includes Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro; Tchaikovsky’s Nocturne For Cello And piano, Op 19 No.4; Debussy’s L’Isle Joyeuse; Brahms’ Violin Sonata No.3 In D Minor, Op 108; and Beethoven’s Sonata In C Minor Op 10 No.1 (First Movement). The youngest of the five talents, Michelle, nine, was the only cellist of Singapore’s radio station Symphony 92.4 Young Talents Project 2016 who won first prize of the String Section at the SIFOM 2017. Yeong, 12, is an active member of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, performing both locally and overseas for the past two years. Adrian, also 12, was admitted to the Gifted Young Pianists Course at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts School of Young Talents when he was seven.
Lauren, 14, is the first Singaporean to have won first place at the inaugural American Protege International Vocal Competition in 2012 and was presented with the “Best Performer” award at the winners’ recital at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Also a student at the Gifted Young Pianists Course of Nanyang Academy, Zhang, 15, won several awards, namely second prize in the intermediate category of the National Piano Violin Competition 2015 and first prize in the FJ Benjamin-NAFA SYT Music Competition 2014.
Tickets cost 700 baht and include an after-concert reception. Proceeds go to the Gift of Life Foundation.
