THE ELDERLY INCORPORATED

- — Arusa Pisuthipan

Around 20 years ago, there were only about 4 million elderly in Thailand. Fast-forward to 2014, Thailand saw more than 10 million senior citizens, which accounts for almost 15% of the entire population, according to figures from the National Statistical Office. This simply means our country is an ageing society.

The Foundation for Older People Development predicts that by 2030, Thailand will have around 17.6 million elderly. And by 2040, the number of elderly in the country will reach 20 million, which is equal to around 32% of the whole population.

Thailand needs to be prepared to become a full-fledged aged society.

Realising the need to get ready for this and to raise awareness regarding ageing beautifully, Jin Wellbeing County — which claims the country’s first integrated residential complex for the aged population — is launching a campaign “The Golden Spirit Gallery: The Best 8 Senior Icons Of Thailand” today at the Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel.

The campaign kicks off with a one-day mini photo exhibition featuring eight photos captured through the lenses of eight Thai celebrities, namely veteran director national artist Patravadi Mejudhon, public health expert Dr Chek Thanasiri, Thai architecture expert Vanida Puengsunthorn, renowned historian Paothong Thongchua, former beauty queen Panarat Bunnag, veteran actor Suchao Pongwilai, Paula Westerfield and fashion icon Pusit Patthanaprakan.

Although the photo exhibition is by invitation only, all artworks can be viewed via facebook. com/jinwellbeing.

The photo display serves as an introductory part of the campaign designed by Jin Wellbeing County to inspire the elderly to live their retirement period in a positive light and with bright attitudes, which leads to the “Jin Golden Spirit” photo contest, open for public participation. Those interested can submit photos or portraits featuring senior citizens with related captions. Photos should be inspirational and also show the energy of those in their retirement age — considered the “golden spirit” according to the campaign’s message.

The photo contest runs from tomorrow until Oct 15. Photos can be submitted via the Jin Wellbeing County Facebook page. Prizes include a stay package at Jin Wellbeing County valued at 300,000 baht.

Jin Wellbeing County is operated by Thonburi Healthcare Group. Located on Phahon Yothin Road in Rangsit, the complex is established to meet the rising demand of nursing homes and healthcare designed particularly for the elderly. It will comprise an aged-care centre with day care and a nursing home, clubhouse and wellness centre, as well as the residential section with a total of 1,500 units.

The construction is expected to complete in 2018. The project has been launched for sale since May this year.
