FA Cup draw pits Buriram against hot Bangkok Glass

- TOR CHITTINAND

Buriram United chairman Newin Chidchob’s resolve to sweep all three major domestic titles this season faces a major test in the FA Cup last-16 stage as they have been handed a tough assignment.

Buriram, who currently lead the Thai League 1 standings and are chasing a record fourth title in the centrepiece event, have been drawn to take on fifth-ranked Bangkok Glass.

The last-16 round of the FA Cup will be played on Sept 27.

The official draw for the stage was held at Bangkok’s Rajpruek Club yesterday and was presided over by Football Association of Thailand secretary-general Pol Lt Gen Pisan Jundilok.

Buriram’s arch foes SCG Muang Thong United, the defending league champions, have been given a relatively easier task as they are drawn to face secondtier Lampang.

However, third-placed Bangkok United take on fellow top-flight side Port, who are coached by former national team boss Kiatisak Senamuang.

Big-spending Chiang Rai United could also be in for a surprise as they meet fellow Thai League 1 club Police Tero.

The FA Cup winners will receive five million baht and will have the opportunity to play in the second-round play-off for a place in the 2018 AFC Champions League. The runners-up will get one million baht.
