School boss accused of fraud

>> The Crime Suppression Division has nabbed a tutorial school operator who allegedly lured students into paying money for jobs in state agencies, causing up to 30 million baht in damages.

Wirachai Kalaphakdi, 41, who runs the school, was arrested by CSD officers in front of Tesco Lotus supermarket in Bangkok’s Wang Thonglang district after Kalasin Provincial Court issued a warrant for his arrest on Aug 4.

His business offered tutorial classes for those required to take a mandatory civil service exam before they can work at state agencies or state enterprises.

The school also claimed it has con- nections with some senior figures in the government who can help the candidates secure jobs in the civil service, according to an initial investigation.

However, the students have to pay a large sum of money for the “special help”. Those with an upper vocational certificate are required to pay 550,000 baht each, while others with a bachelor’s degree must pay 650,000 baht in exchange for a guaranteed placement in the state agencies, police said.

The school also claimed it can help students get jobs in the military and police services, especially those in the Immigration Bureau, but they too need to pay 500,000 baht each, according to the investigation.

The suspect will be sent to Kham Muang police in Kalasin for further action.
