Is the A7 still considered the hatchback version of the A6? In a fashion, yes. But don’t consider the second-generation Audi A7 Sportback, as seen here in official pictures, a spin-off from the current A6. In fact, this new A7 is largely based on the next-generation A6 due out next year and the just-launched A8 flagship sedan.

The A7 uses the Volkswagen Group’s latest MLB platform, designed for upper-end luxury sedans with the ability to accommodate electrified drivetrains. The latest Bentley Continental GT and Porsche Panamera also employ this floor plan.

Although the A7 is an evolution in terms of design when compared with its predecessor, there are some new, distinctive elements, such as the front LED lights that now come in three styles.

The cabin, meanwhile, features an enhanced version of Audi’s so- called Virtual Cockpit in which the digital display and two touchscreens are said to be easier to use. The overall effect of the fascia is also said to be tidier in appearance.

The A7 has been designed to take either four or five (2+1 rear bench) people on board and features the usual hatchback practicality. Although the new A7 is 5mm shorter in overall length, the wheelbase has increased by 12mm to boost interior room.

Like before, the A7 wants to highlight its long and sleek profile, the reason why many people like to call it a liftback.

As the A7 now shares its underpinnings with the latest A8, the 48V system on board allows for semi-electric drivetrains like mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

Audi has initially announced one petrol version called the 55 TFSI featuring a 340hp 3.0-litre V6 and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The availability of the 48V system, to increase energy regeneration abilities, helps boost fuel economy to a claimed 14.7kpl.

More powerful variants in the guises of the S7 and RS7 can be expected in the future, with 450hp and 600hp respectively. Also on the cards could be an all-electric version that should be shared with Porsche, which once previewed its EV as the Mission E concept car.

There’s a good chance it will, though sales won’t be big. The A7 Sportback doesn’t have a direct rival: the BMW’s latest 6-series GT has been designed as a high-roof hatchback for people needing to get in and out of the car easily, while the Mercedes-Benz CLS is either a rakish-looking sedan or a shooting-brake estate for buyers placing style over practicality.

Like the CLS, the A7 might be able to attract luxury punters with its sleek and dynamic looks. The starting price would be over 5 million baht when cars are made available for delivery next year.
