IT’S ALMOST ALL NIGHT AT SATHORN 11 ART SPACE

- — Yvonne Bohwongprasert

Looking forward to a night out with friends at an art gallery in Bangkok? Well, get prepared for one at Night Gallery’s “11 Eleven” at Sathorn 11 Art Space, which proudly presents the city’s first of its kind, including all the trimmings of a separate speakeasy style cocktail bar. The night gallery, which kicks off from tomorrow with a group exhibition, has adjusted its opening hours to 5.30pm-1am, Wednesdays to Sundays. Day visits will be by appointment only. The entire idea behind the new set up is to continue with the Sathorn 11 Art Space mission of creating awareness and a buzz for Thai art, adding some zing to the experience with one’s signature cocktail in hand. “11 Eleven” is the title given to the exhibition that will officially declare Sathorn 11 and Bar to be known as a night gallery. Management chose “11 Eleven” to reflect their name and also because it’s the 11th month and 11th day. Featured will be special guest artist Anchalee Arayapongpanich, resident artists Chawat Chumpasan and Kannika Junsuwan, Kreagkrai Sangtong, Krissadank Intasorn, Manit Srisuwan and Parichart Suphaphan. To mark the occasion, top artist Anchalee will be showcasing her newest exhibit titled Orion, a piece containing her portrait as if in Men In Black and holding a killer laser gun. Next to her is that nutty cat with the Orion galaxy on it’s collar. Expect Anchalee’s trademark style of giving her characters gigantic heads and enormous eyes. Resident artists Chawat and Kannika also promise not to disappoint with a preview of part of their collection for next year’s art exhibition. Manit, a portrait master who uses strong colours to set the mood to his art, will also be bringing out his best from his portfolio. This marks another attraction to the growing Bangkok night experience.
