The hammered dulcimer will make its first appearance as a solo instrument during the “Reimagined Classics” concert at Mahidol University’s Prince Mahidol Hall, Salaya campus, on Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 4pm.
Presented by Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, the concert will feature virtuoso Christoph Pfandler and fellow Swiss Lena-Lisa Wüstendörfer, who will conduct the orchestra which marks another year of a special relationship with the Swiss Embassy and business community in Thailand.
Despite its absence from the classical concert stage, the hammered dulcimer is Christoph Pfandler. one of the most internationally recognised instruments in folk music. In Hungary it is the cimbalom, while in Thailand it is
khim, a key instrument in Thai folk music. In his Bangkok debut, the Lucerne native Christoph will perform Swiss composer Paul Huber’s 1994 Concerto For Dul
cimer And Strings, where the percussive notes of the dulcimer contrast with the warm sounds of strings.
Not all is new in this programme of fresh faces and new sounds. Led by Wüstendörfer, the orchestra will play two timeless classics— Rossini’s William
Tell Overture and Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony. The overture from the opera
Lena-Lisa Wüstendörfer.
William Tell also has a Swiss theme, as it depicts the events of a story that takes place in the Swiss Alps. The Fifth Sym
phony has become one of Tchaikovsky’s most endearing works especially for its colourful orchestration and its distinctive theme, which runs through all four movements of the symphony.
