Top cop likens lottery, hit-and-run cases
The 30-million-baht lottery ticket case involving a teacher and a retired policeman is similar to that of former teacher Jomsap Saenmuangkhot, in which people tried to help her secure a retrial to get her 2005 hitand-run conviction overturned, according to national police chief Chakthip Chaijinda.
Pol Gen Chakthip yesterday attended a CSD meeting among officers looking into the lottery dispute case and said substantial progress had been made. Officers are expected to ascertain by the end of the month who the lottery tickets belong to.
“In my opinion, this case is similar to that of Jomsap Saenmuangkhot,” Pol Gen Chakthip said.
Ms Jomsap is among 11 people accused of conspiring to secure a retrial to overturn her 2013 conviction for causing the death of Lua Pobamrung in a hit-and-run road accident in Nakhon Phanom’s Renu Nakhon district on March 11, 2005.
On Nov 17, the Supreme Court dismissed the retrial bid suggested that a network had been hired to falsify statements to clear Ms Jomsap’s name.
Pol Gen Chakthip went on to say that in the lottery case, someone must be prosecuted, adding anyone found to have been involved in providing false witnesses and fabricating evidence would also be held accountable.
Pol Lt Gen Thitirat said police have substantiated evidence to hand which can point to who told a lie.
He did not give details of what police have discovered.
According to a police source, Pol Gen Chakthip and Pol Lt Gen Thitirat told officers at the meeting to pay attention to evidence gathered from Red City market in Kanchanaburi’s Muang district, where the winning lottery tickets were purchased.
An investigation must also look into who sold the winning tickets to Pol Lt Jaroon, who told police he did not remember which vendor he bought the tickets from, the source said.
The source said police had detected a network behind the offence.
One person was found to have clearly committed a wrongdoing and an investigation is under way to charge others, the source added.
