AWS: Cloud computing to skyrocket
Cloud computing services in Thailand are in the early adopter stage, with the market projected to grow exponentially in the next 4-5 years thanks to digital disruption, says Amazon Web Services Thailand (AWS), the local operating unit of the global cloud service provider.
“Thailand is an early adopter country as corporate users have not spent much on cloud computing,” said Chawapol Jariyawiroj, country manager of AWS.
The company foresees opportunities in the financial, retail, telecom, manufacturing, media and entertainment, and digital businesses.
“Changes in customer behaviour and digital disruption have driven those sectors to adopt more cloud services,” Mr Chawapol said.
Cloud computing can enable business to save 20-50% on IT costs and have them launch new products and services faster.
“Apart from startups, we saw more interest from traditional big corporations last year,” Mr Chawapol said.
Moreover, the company sees growing demand for cloud service in data analytics, data lakes, artificial intelligence (AI)/ machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), enterprise resource planning (ERP) and mobile workload.
“Data analytics, machine learning and AI are highly interested in banks and retail, as they need to predict customers’ preferences,” Mr Chawapol said.
He said customers have higher expectations and they need faster customised services. Businesses need to have predictive business analytics capable of customer insight and micro-segmentation so that they can survive the digital era.
An American Enterprise Institute article in October 2017 reported that the digital disruption life cycle of organisations is on average 2-3 years.
Mr Chawapol said successful businesses are characterised by the speedy launch of their innovations, economies of scale in technology use and flexible capacities for IT resources to fit their needs.
Cloud service enables corporations to achieve all these qualities by bringing data to business value and allowing the businesses to experiment with new ideas at lower cost.
“During digital transformations, corporations need to have an innovation culture of ‘learn and fail fast’ to launch new services faster, get customer feedback and reinvent new developments, then get back to customers,” Mr Chawapol said.
Innovation culture organisations also need to have technology platforms that can bring together all ideas and allow everyone to innovate, he said.
AWS’s success is a result of the culture of innovation to put customers first, invent constantly and be patient with failure in the short term to commit to longterm success.
