The TPO and energetic sax

-

Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) will perform two atmospheric symphonic pieces and one of the gems of the saxophone repertoire during the “Fanfares And Flourishes” concert at Mahidol University’s Prince Mahidol Hall, Salaya campus, this Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 4pm.

Taras Bulba is one of the most famous works by Leos Janacek, who was among the most daring and exploratory of all modern composers whose musical style is adapted from folk music. This threemovement rhapsody takes its inspiration from the short novel by Nikolai Gogol and delivers a musical impression of the wild, militaristic exploits of Taras the Cossack who falls madly in love with the daughter of a Polish general.

Sinfonietta is Janacek’s late work for large orchestra composed in dedication to the Czechoslovak Army in order to express “contemporary free man, his spiritual beauty and joy, his strength, courage and determination to fight for victory”.

Written in 1941 by Paul Creston, Concerto For Alto Saxophone, Op 26 is equally energetic as it displays the bravura nature of the saxophone with dazzling displays of technique, leading to a powerful conclusion.

Joining the TPO to perform this American work will be Naomi Shiraishi, the talented Japanese saxophonist and winner of the 17th Osaka Music Competition. The orchestra will be directed by chief conductor Alfonso Scarano.

Tickets cost 400, 600, 800, 1,000 and 1,500 baht (half prices for students below the age of 25) and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major outlets (visit thaiticketmajor.com) or PHM Box Office (call 02-8496565/6 ext 6603/4 (6624 and 6626 on concert days). Visit thailandphil.com.
