Sens trade Pha­neuf to Kings for Ga­borik

LOS AN­GE­LES: The Ot­tawa Se­na­tors have dealt rugged de­fence­man Dion Pha­neuf to the Los An­ge­les Kings in ex­change for Slo­vakian for­ward Mar­ian Ga­borik and Nick Shore, the NHL teams an­nounced on Tues­day night.

“It’s dis­ap­point­ing when you do get moved but with say­ing that I’m very ex­cited about where I’m go­ing and to be a LA King,” Pha­neuf said.

The Kings also get jour­ney­man for­ward Nate Thomp­son in the deal.

Pha­neuf played in the sec­ond pe­riod against the Pitts­burgh Pen­guins but was not on the Se­na­tors’ bench to start the third.

Pha­neuf had three goals and 13 as­sists to go along with 34 penalty min­utes in 52 games this sea­son. Over 13 NHL sea­sons with the Cal­gary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs and Ot­tawa, Pha­neuf has 133 goals and 345 as­sists and 1,277 penalty min­utes.

He came to Ot­tawa in a mid-sea­son trade with the Leafs in Fe­bru­ary of 2016. He won a gold medal with Canada at the 2007 World Cham­pi­onships.

Ga­borik, 36, has seven goals and seven as­sists in 29 games this sea­son for the Kings.

He has never won an Olympic medal but is best known in­ter­na­tion­ally for scor­ing twice in the fi­nal five min­utes to lift Slo­vakia to a 5-3 up­set win over mighty Rus­sia at the 2006 Turin Win­ter Olympics.

In 1,019 ca­reer NHL games, Ga­borik has 403 goals and 808 points.
