Innovation, creativity and craftsmanship

- Patcharawalai Sanyanusin

‘Mass x Clusivity” is the central theme for the “Innovative Craft Award 2018” which is accepting entries until March 31. Held to promote creativity and craftsmanship among professionals and enthusiasts, this is a new platform put forward by the Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand (Sacict) to encourage design students and interested designers to come up with new work. Their dream creations can be for household use or decoration but should be more “accessible” to the general public while maintaining an identity, charm and creative craftsmanship. In other words, they should be realistic enough to be produced for commercial purposes. The designed works can be any of the following types: woodwork, wickerwork, pottery, textile, lacquerware, leather, paper and stoneware. However, they must be original and never before available for competition. The competition is open to design students studying in university or equivalent and interested members of the public with a design-education background. They must be Thai nationals and can enter as individuals or as teams of at least two members. Only 20 eligible designs in the Student category and another 20 in the Open category will be selected in the first round, which is scheduled for April 23. Half of them will be chosen in the second round on April 30. The successful candidates will then be granted funding of 5,000 baht each for the Student category and 50,000 baht each for the Open category to further develop their designs into real creations for a presentation to the judging panel in the final round, which will take place later in June. The first, second and third winners of the Student category will receive a cash prize worth 30,000, 20,000 and 10,000 baht, respectively, plus a plaque and a certificate. The Innovative Craft Award 2018 will go to the top winner of the Open category, who will also receive a cash prize of 100,000 baht. Entries can be in the form of hand-drawn or computer-generated designs and should be submitted along with the application form to the Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand, 59 Moo 4 tambon Chang Yai, Bang Sai, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya 13290 or via sacict-award.com/application.
