Novitiate ordination re- enacted at Seacon Bangkae

-

The rarely- seen tradition of novitiate ordination in northern Thailand will take centre stage during “Poy Sang Long” fair at the Center Court of Seacon Bangkae, Phetkasem Road, from Friday to April 1.

The title of the fair refers to the famous ceremony of Mae Hong Son province that has been passed down through generations. Visitors will witness the reenactment of the parade of Poy Sang Long rites, aka the Festival of the Crystal Sons, held to celebrate hilltribe Tai Yai’s very important novitiate ordination of samanera (novitiate monks) in Buddhism.

The parade will consist of young boys dressed in ancient king’s costumes. They will be carried on the back of Tapae Song Lang (or Tapae), their personal babysitters who will keep the boys on their backs making sure that the boys’ feet will not touch the ground. They will move along the parade amid northern music to promote the colourful and beautiful tradition and culture, as well as Tai Yai ways of life.

Usually held at the end of March or early April each year, the tradition is aimed for young children to spend their summer break learning Lord Buddha’s teachings.

The 10- day fair will also feature Tai Yai architecture that is exquisitely charming in its unique building shapes and the demonstrations of rare local northern craftsmanship such as how to prepare items and offerings for the ordination ceremony.

A number of traditional dance performances by Tai Yai, Lanna performances and folk music will be staged every day while a Lanna- style market will offer a variety of Tai Yai delicacies and northern dishes. Tai Yai tribal apparel will also be available.
