Vacheron Constantin’s nod to history
In the same year that Elvis Presley recorded Heartbreak Hotel, Grace Kelly became the princess of Monaco and Christopher Cockerell obtained a patent for the first working hovercraft, Vacheron Constantin introduced Reference 6073.
Dating to 1956, the historical watch was equipped with a self-winding movement at a time when most other models were driven by manual-winding mechanisms. Other characteristics included a water-resistant multi-sided caseback and aesthetics inspired by the emblematic Maltese cross.
The DNA has been passed on to the contemporary Fiftysix timepieces unveiled at SIHH 2018, held in Geneva earlier this year.
Named after the launch year of the Reference 6073, the collection is expressed through three 40mm models: self-winding, day-date with power-reserve indicator and complete calendar with precision moon phase.
The lugs of their cases are inspired by the branches of the Maltese cross. ss. Rising above the bezel, the box-type cryst tal is now in sapphire, which is more scratch resistant than Plexiglas or mineral glass use d on vintage timepieces.
Though like in the 1950s model, t the chapter ring is punctuated by alternatin ng Arabic numerals and baton-type hour-m markers. The two subtle tones achieved by y finishing effects lend depth and a play o of light across the sector-type dial.
The pink-gold or stainless st eel Fiftysix variations, including thos se with complications, are powered by y a self-winding movement, as a trib- ute to Reference 6073’s movement t and for the wearer’s convenience.
A transparent caseback reveals the movement and its finishing as well as the newly-designed openworked oscillating weight bearing a Maltese Cross appliqué and a frosted-snailed finish.
