Five Thais earn title shots

Five Thai men paraded into the finals of the ASBC Asian Youth Confederat­ion Boxing Championsh­ips 2018 at Indoor Stadium, Hua Mark yesterday.

Thitisan Panmod (49kg), Sarawut Sukthet (52kg), Atichai Phoemsap (60kg), Peerapat Yeasungnoe­n (69kg) and Weerapon Jongjohor (75kg) came through their semi-finals yesterday. They now have a chance to win tickets to this year’s Youth Olympics in Argentina as the championsh­ips also serve as Asia’s qualifying round for the Buenos Aires Games in October.

Weerapon, nephew of Olympic hero Somjit, edged Navo Tamazov of Uzbekistan 3-2 and will take on Nurbek Oralbay of Kazakhstan in today’s final.

“I will give it my all in the final to win a spot at the Youth Olympics,” said Weerapon.

Thitisan had few problems in his 5-0 win over Russu Laurente of the Philippine­s and will fight Makhmud Sabyrkhan of Kazakhstan in the title bout.

Sarawut defeated Mohammad Algharaghi­r of Jordan 5-0 and will battle Samandar Kholmurodo­v of Uzbekistan for the top honours.

Atichai beat Ryunosuke Tsutsumi of Japan 5-0 to set up a final bout against Ankit of India.

Peerapat beat Nuradin Rustambek of Kyrgyzstan by the same score and will fight Yermankhan Zhakpekov of Kazakhstan in the final.

Bannphon Pannon, son of former national team fighter Suban, narrowly lost to Talgat Shaiken of Kazakhstan 3-2 in the 64kg semis, while Noppharat Thakhui fell to Criztian Pitt Laurente of the Philippine­s 4-1 in the 56kg event.

The women’s semi-finals were to take place last night with Thai figthers Nillada Meekoon (48kg), Kittiya Nampai (51kg), Panpatchar­a Somnuek (57kg) and Porntip Buapa (60kg) in action.

Today’s finals begin at 11am.
