SOFT SERVE PLEASE

SAVOUR ICE CREAM AT EMPTY TASTY’S SMALL CAFE

- STORY & PHOTOS PASAVAT TANSKUL

With only a few minutes walk away from the BTS Ari station, Empty Tasty’s small cafe is tucked within soi 1 of the Ari neighbourhood, between the local eateries and shops. Walking into the small-scale, black-andwhite space, customers are greeted by owner Wachira “Pond” Laongtep, who invites customers to relax and enjoy low-fat, soft serve ice-cream after a long day of work or as a place to gather and chill out with friends and family.

Empty Tasty’s black-and-white interior design corresponds with their two soft serve flavours — white premium milk and black charcoal yoghurt — which customers can select either of the two as the base of their order. After choosing their cup size and flavour, pick one to five toppings from a wide range of more than 20 toppings, from cookies and granola to fresh fruits and jellies, enabling you to customise and experiment different combinations of tastes and flavours.

However, if you are overwhelmed by the numerous topping choices or just can’t decide what to choose, Empty Tasty also has a special menu where they prepare certain combinations. Right off the bat, we had a taste of their popular Foi Thong Nutella (B139) combination, served with milk flavour, where each ingredient is layered one after the other, with some bits and pieces of Koko Krunch thrown in at the bottom of the cup.

If eating ice-cream from a cup isn’t your thing, the cafe also serves specially-made waffle cones. We went for the simple yet delightfully sweet Rainbow Signature (B79) cone, which is charcoal yoghurt covered in colourful sprinkles.

Empty Tasty’s menu isn’t limited to just creamy and frozen yoghurts, toasts are up for order, too. The Ham Cheese Toast (B59), served on a tray with a pair of mini two-pronged forks and ketchup for dip, can be enjoyed as a quick meal shared among friends before having a taste of the cafe’s delightfully sweet treats.

For drinks, the menu is split into two categories — “non milk”, which is essentially sodas and juices and “non coffee”, which is combined selection of milk and tea. We picked the G Grape Soda (B45), while sweet and purple, was pretty standa ard as far as soda drinks go. On the non coffee side of things, w we tried their cold cup of crimson-brown Hojicha Latte (B79), w which is a type of green tea roasted over charcoal.

With cheap prices for frosty and delectable cold desserts, E Empty Tasty’s compact and homely cafe can serve as a nice h hangout for friends. Their wide range of ingredients sees us c coming back to experiment the different combinations. So if y your taste buds are feeling neglected, come on over and ref fresh your palate with yummy ice-cream, soft serve style.
