AIN’T NO THANG BUT A SWEET THANG

CREMA GELATO & BOMBE IS THE NEW DESSERT DESTINATION

- STORY ERIC E SURBANO

Desserts are all the craze in the Big Mango, and there’s a plethora of places where you can go to satisfy your sweet tooth. Jumping into this ever-expanding fray is Crema Gelato & Bombe. Having opened in January, its sole branch at Siam Square One is a place for customers to gather over sweet treats. If you haven’t already gotten it from their name, they specialise in Italian desserts that are sure to satisfy any dessert lover.

Gelato, the slightly upper-scale version of an ice cream, is an Italian favourite. Some shops sell it in Bangkok, and while flavours may be similar, it’s in the preparation and ingredients that set them apart. Crema Gelato & Bombe prides themselves in Italian-imported ingredients, as well as making a fresh batch every four days. They’ve got a staggering total of 32 flavours, which they rotate in and out with 18 flavours available for your taste buds to savour each time. Stumped on which flavour to choose? It really depends on what you’re craving. If you want something sweet and creamy, the Stracciatella and dark chocolate flavour is your best bet. If you want something fruity, their Raspberry and mango gives you a bit of tang with a tropical feel. Be sure not to miss their signature Crema flavour, which is a creamy and zesty conocotion. You can get it straight-up in a cup of three scoops (B189), but you can also go the other route and have two scoops sandwiched in a brioche (B199). Yes, a brioche. Consider it an upgrade from those ice cream sandwiches you buy off the street.

Despite the gelato being their first product, the management conceded that their bombes were gaining more popularity, and it wasn’t hard to see why (bombes, by the way, are the Italian version of doughnuts). There are three flavours to choose from: Calda (B60), Crema (B70), and our personal favourite, Nutella (B80). Each of these bombes are filled with these, um, fillings that they almost explode when you bite into it, which kind of makes sense because they’re called bombes.

While there may be a huge amount of dessert shops available for you to ruin your teeth at, Crema Gelato & Bombe is here to entice you away from them, hoping that a spoonful of gelato and a bite into their luscious bombes will make you fall in sweet, dessert bliss and forget every other sweet temptation out there.

Crema Gelato & Bombe is on the ground floor of Siam Square One, Rama I Road. Visit fb.com/CremaBangkok.
