Mahidol University, Salaya campus June 15 at 7pm and June 16 at 4pm Spanish-American conductor José-Luis Novo will direct Thailand Philharmon­ic Orchestra during the “Elgar’s Enigma” concert. The programme features Gershwin’s Concerto In F and Elgar’s Variations On An Original Theme “Enigma”, Op36. Joining the orchestra as guest soloist will be pianist Christophe­r Janwong McKiggan.

Opera for all

Yamaha Studio, ground floor Fortune Town, Ratchadaph­isek Road June 16 at 5pm Bangkok Youth Opera presents the “Opera for All!” concert featuring young talented singers and also a singer from Grand Opera Thailand. They will be singing some of the best known and loved songs from musicals, operetta and opera. The repertoire includes Webber’s Pie Jesu, Memory from Cats, The Cat Duet and Se Tu M’ami; Frederick’s song from

Pirates of Penzance; and Stars from Les Miserables. Joining as special guests will be Japanese soprano Tae Miyata and Jak Cholvijarn.

Flute and piano

Sala Sudasiri Sobha, Lat Phrao 41 June 17 at 4pm The Embassy of Italy and the Gift of Life Foundation present a flute and piano recital by Italian flute player Luisa Sello and Thailand’s leading classical pianist Nat Yontararak. They will render a challengin­g repertoire of works by Mozart, Gluck, Chaminade, Donizetti, Rossini, Ponchielli, Bizet and Borne. Sello is ambassador of Music and Italian Culture while Nat is a Steinway Artist with two decoration­s of honour — from the Polish and Italian government­s.

The Embassy of Italy presents a concert by Lucia Ianniello and Paolo Tombolesi Duo featuring a programme dedicated to the female composers of the Italian jazz music, with a special tribute to composer/harpsichor­dist/soprano Francesca Caccini and composer/soprano Barbara Strozzi. Lucia and Paolo have been playing together as duo and in larger ensembles. They recorded two CDs together — Maintenant and Live At Acuto Jazz.

Youth string orchestra to perform

The award-winning Sunrise String Orchestra will give a classical performanc­e as part of the “Thai Talents At Sala Sudasiri Sobha” concert series. The programme includes a classical repertoire for string orchestra by Mozart, Back, Elgar and Vivaldi. Featured as soloists are three young performers of different nationalit­ies — Ryan Chen, an Irish-Taiwanese boy; Kokoro Maruyama, a Japanese boy and Noranun Narupakorn, a third-year university student. Proceeds will go to the Gift of Life Foundation to help blood-disease patients in Thailand.

Culture Collective Studio is staging The

Picture Of Dorian Gray, based on the classic novel of the same title by Oscar Wilde. Directed by Loni Berry, the story is set in a Bangkok cabaret in the 1940s and 1950s and features jazz standards crooned by American singer Keithen Carter. The cast includes South African, Swiss, Lithuanian and French actors and Thai actresses.

A new version of Crimson Rose is being staged by director Pattarasud­a Anuman Rajadhon. It’s based on a play of the same title by Daraka Wongsiri, one of Thailand’s most prolific modern playwright­s who received the IATC’s Lifetime Achievemen­t Award in 2016. It tells about five women living in a boarding house owned by one of them. Beneath their seemingly harmonious relationsh­ips, however, are brutal secrets like roses with thorns that prick and cut.
