King Rama I’s capital defence system

Fourteen forts were constructe­d to defend the capital during the reign of King Rama I. They are as follows:

1) Phra Sumen Fort (located in the northernmo­st area of Rattanakos­in Island on Phra Athit Road and close to Suan Santi Chai Prakan Park)

2) Yukhon Thon Fort (formerly situated in front of Wat Bowon Niwet temple)

3) Maha Prap Fort (formerly situated between Wan Chat Bridge and Phan Fa Lilat intersecti­on

4) Mahankan Fort (at the foot of Phan Fa Lilat Bridge)

5 ) Mu Thaluang Fort (near the road leading into Rommaninat Park)

6) Suea Thayan Fort (near Damrong Sathit Bridge)

7) Maha Chai Fort (now the location of DBS Thai Danu Bank’s Wang Burapha branch on Yaowarat Road)

8) Chak Phet Fort (located in the southernmo­st zone of Rattanakos­in Island at the foot of the Memorial Bridge)

9) Phi Suea Fort (near Pak Khlong Tatat) 10) Maha Roek Fort (inside Rajini School) 11) Maha Pak (in the Tha Tian area) 12) Phra Chan Fort (the current location of Tha Prachan Pier next to Thammasat University’s Tha Prachan campus)

13) Phra Athit Fort (the current area at the foot of Phra Pin Klao Bridge)

14) Isinthon Fort (now home to the Buddhist Associatio­n of Thailand, opposite Soi Chana Songkhram)
