Buriram wary of Kirins’ threat
Thunder Castle not underestimating Muang Thong as they host relegation contenders Chainat
>> Thai League 1 leaders Buriram United are still wary of the threat posed by their bitter rivals SCG Muang Thong United in the title race.
After 18 games, defending champions Buriram have 44 points, two ahead of Bangkok United.
Muang Thong are fourth on 33 points, one behind surprise package Port.
“We can’t overlook Muang Thong although we have a considerable lead against them,’’ said Buriram chairman Newin Chidchob.
“They are a strong team and there are a lot of matches remaining. We just can’t underestimate anyone.”
Buriram should have few problems when they host relegation contenders Chainat tonight.
Chainat are 14th in the 18-team league with five teams going down to Thai League 2 at the end of the season.
Buriram’s strikeforce will be led by in-form Brazilian striker Diogo Luis Santo, the league’s top scorer with 17 goals.
Buriram have signed former Brazil forward Osvaldo Filho, who is likely to partner Diogo against the Hornbills.
Second-ranked Bangkok United have a tricky assignment at Suphanburi today.
Eighth-placed Suphanburi are unpredictable and strong at home.
However, Bangkok United have won 10 matches in a row and should be able to finish off the hosts.
Muang Thong United are at home to Air Force Central tomorrow.
Barring a major upset, the Kirins should cruise to a comfortable win against the bottom side who only have five points from 18 games.
Third-placed Port travel to seventhranked Ratchaburi while falling giants Bangkok Glass host fellow relegation strugglers Navy.
