Golfers gun for two gold medals
The Thailand Golf Association unveiled its seven players for the Asian Games yesterday.
The women’s team are led by 15-yearold prodigy Atthaya Thitikul, who was the best amateur at the Women’s British Open, which ended on Sunday.
The other two female players are Kan Bunnabodi and Kulthida Pramphun.
The men’s squad are spearheaded by Kosuke Hamamoto, the 2017 SEA Games champion.
His teammates are Sadom Kaewkanchana, Wanchai Luangnitikul and Wishayanont Chotehiranrungroeng.
TGA president Rangsrid Luxitanonda hoped his players will claim two gold medals at the Indonesia Games.
“I am confident that we will win at least two gold medals in the team events,” he said.
Atthaya said: “My confidence has been boosted by the performance at the Women’s British Open. I have been training with professionals and won’t put extra pressure on myself. I will try to help the team retain the team title.”
Last year, she won the Ladies European Thailand Championship to become the youngest golfer ever to win a professional golf tournament at 14 years, four months and 19 days.
A few weeks later, she captured two gold medals at the SEA Games.
The country grabbed its first-ever Asian Games medals in golf at the 2014 tournament in South Korea where the Thais took home one gold (women’s team), one silver (women’s individual) and two bronze medals (women’s individual and men’s team).
