ALL ABOUT THAT KID DETECTIVE

THE DETECTIVE CONAN CAFE HAS ARRIVED IN BANGKOK

- STORY ERIC E SURBANO

The Detective Conan manga and anime has been around for some time and has gained a following in Thailand. Tales of a high-school detective transformed into a kid due to a pill that was meant to kill him is still ongoing until today. Fans of the anime are in for a treat because Bangkok is now home to the first overseas Detective Conan Cafe outside of Japan.

On the Ground Floor of Siam Center and with Bake A Wish as the cafe operator, the Detective Conan Cafe wants to give fans an interesting experience with their themed menu, which will be available only until the end of September.

It would be safe to expect an immersive experience at a themed cafe — at least, that’s what I was expecting. However, the only thing that shows off the cafe’s “Conan-ness” is the number of cutouts of characters from the anime, as well as a big picture at the front where you can take a few pics. Other than that, the menu is the only thing that’s Conan-nised.

The Conan Cafe’s menu, though not sizable, has a good variety of things and all of them have a tie-in into the anime. You can try the APTX-4869 big capsule curry (B250), which is served with the usual pork, carrots and potatoes. If you want to switch sides and join the Black Organization, try the Bourbon’s spicy seafood pasta (B200). There are also plenty of dessert choices like the Detective Conan’s special choux cream party plate (B300) and Shinchi’s favourite lemon pie (B165 for two pieces). They’ve also got beverages like the Detective Conan hot latte (B130), which is served with a picture of a character from the anime.

Of all the things on the menu, I tried the curry and lemon pie. The bottom line: it’s okay, but it isn’t anything special. The curry was like any other curry and the lemon pie was a bit too sweet for my taste, but there wasn’t really anything that set these dishes apart except, of course, that they were Conan-nised.

If you’re a fan of the anime, the Detective Conan Cafe is worth checking out. You can get some good photos to share on social media.

On the ground floor of Siam Center, Detective Conan Cafe opens daily from 11am-10pm and accepts last order at 9.30pm. Go to fb.com/ConanCafeBkk for more info.
